Under the Greenland glacier Gavita scientists have found an asteroid crater with a diameter of 31 kilometers.
In the study area, the experts used data collected by NASA in the period from 1997 to 2016, as well as the results obtained in the study area using radar techniques and geochemical analysis of the soil, which were characteristic of meteoric craters abundant minerals.
According to scientists, the crater of this size was formed due to the fall of the iron asteroid, the size of which was about one kilometer. Yet to accurately determine the fall time is not possible, but it is clear that it happened not later than the Pleistocene, which began 2.5 million years ago and ended 12 thousand years ago.
Also found the crater managed to install several achievements. Now it is the biggest crater found beneath the continental ice sheet, and entered the list of the 25 largest known craters on Earth.
