The creators of Instagram announced today the introduction of new features that will make the app more convenient to use for people with visual impairments. The changes will allow screen readers to describe the pictures or automatically using AI, or reading custom descriptions added by users.
These descriptions, known as “alt text”, widely used in the Internet currently is built into Instagram. Users can enter their own descriptions of photos to people using the program for screen readers, could hear the displayed items out loud as they browse your feed, explore page or profile.
If no description, Instagram will automatically detect that the photograph, using the technology of object recognition, and then reads its automatic description of the picture aloud. Descriptions alt text will not be visible, and users will have to go into “advanced settings ” of the photo to include it.
Although Instagram first applies this function, Facebook is using it for many years.
