Researchers from the University of Berlin have discovered a mechanism used by the body to protect stem cells from bowel cancer.
Discovery scientists demonstrated that the immune system plays a crucial another important role in maintaining the health of the body, writes the journal Nature.
Professor Andreas Diefenbach (Andreas Diefenbach) and his team were able to prove on the example of mice that the cells of the innate immune system is able to detect genotoxic environmental factors that are present in the intestine.
How does the immune system
These include some of the glucosinolates are natural components of plants that are commonly found in many varieties of cabbage.
Once the cells of the innate immune system detect the damaging glucosinolates, they send interleukin 22, a kind of cellular messenger.
The mechanism allows the epithelial stem cells to identify potential DNA damage at an earlier stage and faster to restore them.
For the immunologist these data are not only evidence of a previously unknown regulatory system that is used by the body to protect against colon cancer.
Organs of the immune system
This also suggests that the immune system performs much more complex functions than a simple protection mechanism against pathogens.
“The immune system controls the healthy growth and functioning of various organs in the body,” explains Professor Diefenbach.
Scientists hope to conduct more research for a more detailed study of the complex interactions between dietary components, intestinal flora, intestinal wall and immune system.
“Thus we will be able to find the key to why so many inflammatory disorders,” summarizes Professor Diefenbach.
