It is believed that a healthy diet helps you maintain not only physical but also mental health.
Most useful in this regard can rightly be called the Mediterranean diet, which is characterized by a large number of fresh vegetables and fruits, whole grains, nuts and seeds, fish and chicken, as well as the limited consumption of animal meat.
Last year, scientists using a meta-analysis has shown that the Mediterranean diet reduces the risk of depression by a third.
However, the effectiveness of a Mediterranean (or any other) diet could be explained by the fact that effective actually one product or group of products.
In the new work, scientists from the University of California at Los Angeles under the leadership of Linor Arab (Lenore Arab) decided to check how related the consumption of walnuts and the risk of developing depression.
The researchers from America, analyzing the eating habits and mental health 26656 thousand people came to the conclusion that consumption of walnuts reduces the risk of developing depression. An article published in the journal Nutrients, reports Wave.
Given the adverse variables like Smoking and alcohol consumption, researchers found that among those who consume walnuts (on average — about 24 grams per day) depression was found at 26 percent less than the fans of other nuts and those who do not eat nuts at all.
No such effect was observed among women. Also among the fans of walnuts there was a large interest in daily activities, they feel more energetic and less hopeless.
Studies indicate a positive role of the consumption of walnuts in improving some cognitive functions and slow the aging process.
However, the results of this study should be treated with caution: due to the fact that scientists have not conducted long-term studies, one cannot conclude causal relationship, besides data on food habits was gathered on the basis of just two days.
Walnuts contain a lot of vitamins: B2, B12, A, D, C, E, K, unsaturated fatty acids omega 3 and omega 6, phosphorus, manganese, iodine, potassium, magnesium, selenium, cobalt and many other nutrients and macronutrients. Walnuts are more nutritious than beef, and 17% made up of protein, so are an indispensable ingredient in vegetarian and vegan diet.
Recall that scientists have discovered why antidepressants do not help one third of people suffering from severe forms of depression.
