Scientists from Duke University have proposed a new blood test that will determine how the blocked blood vessels.
Doctors examined 40 patients admitted to the emergency Department, and found signs of decreasing blood flow to the heart, for two hours also were observed changes in the five metabolites in their blood. PLOS ONE.
All patients were referred to the hospital with symptoms of ischemic heart disease: chest pain, jaw and shoulders.
As clogged arteries
The researchers hope to use sharp changes in the metabolites of fatty acids and amino acids (energy source for cells) as an early biological indicator of restricted blood flow, which can complement or even replace current tests.
“The cardiologists are stress test to determine who is at risk of heart disease. This will help us understand whether the patient needs an invasive diagnostic methods, for example, catheterization,” said a leading auto research Alexander T. Limkokwing Junior (Alexander T. Limkakeng Jr.).
Previous studies have shown that metabolites may indicate heart disease, but scientists still have not found a specific metabolic signatures.
In this study, the researchers assessed the presence of more than 60 chemical substances or compounds in the blood to identify five specific metabolites, which seem to change in patients with abnormal cardiac stress test.
Cardiologists hope to conduct more extensive study to further test this approach for identifying ischemic disease of the coronary arteries.
